American life today is centered on the workplace. The average adult spends more time each day w/his or her employers or employees than w/his or her partner, spouse, or children. Emotionally, our lives might center on our families and friends, but in terms of sheer time and energy, we spend most of our resources trying to make it at work.
Work, for many of us, is full of tension, anxiety, and pressure-w/a bit of boredom and frustrations thrown in. The average workday is a less-than-sacred experience, to be sure. So how do we transform the area of work from a material-based focus-w/all its psychological and emotional pain-to an experience of spiritual freedom and joy? A mystic takes every circumstance back to its spiritual foundation, asking fundamental questions about our higher identity and purpose. Who am I? Why am I here? What is the ultimate meaning of my life, my relationships, my work? If life is to have deeper meaning, can our work be something we merely do to make money? Or can work itself become sacred, a channel through which we shine our light and extend our love?
